I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and trauma specialist with over 10 years of experience working with individuals experiencing varying levels of unwanted mental health obstacles. An office and couch was not my style to impact others, so I built my career coming to them, working with clients inside residential treatment, in-patient psychiatric, and in-home counseling with high risk families. By having worked for the high risk community, I can say not only have I heard "almost" all, but I've been there and carried some of the battle scars too. I've always preferred environments where I've had to give my best work but work fast with client's who did not have the time or patience for a more drawn out treatment.
It's been my desire to specialize with those clients who were dealt the most challenging of hands. I guess you can say those are my people. I'm accustomed to working in areas of depressive episodes, panic and anxiety, broken family relationships, life stressors, parenting issues, abnormal psychiatric, spiritual issues, and traumatic experiences.
While I may utilize multiple evidence based treatment strategies, inner healing doesn't come in a box, and is different for everyone. I believe the best therapy is done through having as much first hand experience in the trenches with what it is that we are working on. Some wisdom can only be gained by experiencing.
Is this counseling or therapy? Counseling may look like just casual chatting back and forth via messaging as some seem to prefer to have a second party help them look at their life. For others focusing on more significant distresses, therapy could consist of the traditional order: a more comprehensive session to identify the sometimes hidden roots of the problem (what sustains it) and then at your readiness some live sessions to begin the work to promote your mind and body Healing, Our Head is still attached to our body, so for some it may be necessary to take re-ownership of both components.
But you may be thinking: Therapy doesn't really work, I'm not a mushy feelings type of person... You're in good company; We're just re-learning balance. You used to have it! Finding again that place of optimal functioning. If your mind rattled your world enough to get you to even consider therapy, it's more likely you have a talent for a very strong mind, but you may just need to learn to control your power.
Our professional relationship and your trust in my care for people and confidence to help them overcome, I hold as my greatest skills.

Online counseling allows you to receive care from a mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Starting at $65 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.

Great connection and guidance. Calming personality. Highly recommend.
He has been everything I needed in a therapist, adaptable, encouraging, and knowledgeable. 10/10 I am so glad he is on Betterhelp and I am able to have his expertise.
Very knowledgeable and attentive
Steven is very kind and understanding. He's knowledgeable and very helpful.
I’ve been working with Steven for about a month now and he’s been a true blessing. He’s opened my eyes to a lot and I’m looking forward for more.
I have only talked to him twice and he has been very helpful with my panic attacks and giving me ways to cope. Thank you Steven
Steven has been fantastic, would absolutely recommend
Great listener. Offers good insight.
Steve has changed my mind about therapy. I’m not the ‘therapy type’. I thought talking about ‘the problems’ doesn’t solve the problems, and therefore is useless. However, I’ve learned so much through just talking. I can see things from different points of view, additionally, getting personal validation is so comforting. (I also previously thought that was nonsensical) I’ve grown so much this year, and I’ve learned more from my experiences than I have ever before. Even though I have been in therapy multiple times I never thought that it worked. A big step to that is finding someone that you actually like and respect. It can’t be just you respect this person as a professional you have to like them as a person. I’ve never had that step before. That in itself was the missing link in my self discovery journey.
Steven does a wonderful job at helping you understand and process trauma and situations. He explains things thoroughly and helps with solutions and steps to take to deal with and process your situation. Highly recommend
very great therapist and a great listener! never makes me feel like a burden and always listens to what i have to say. provides great advice and feedback on my issues. def recommend!!
Awesome counselor. Utmost professional and dedicated to the client work
Steve is very practical.
I highly recommend Steve Van Schaick. Steve has been an absolutely incredible resource for me. He is a great listener, and his calm demeanor is a major plus. He helped me through a lot of personal struggles, and I can certainly say I am better off having worked with Steve.
I’ve been working with Steve for quite a while now. I have grown rather fond of Steve, I enjoy our therapeutic relationship. I’m really seeing the worth of self reflection plus, I am gathering better coping skills. I feel better about my decision making process. I don’t feel like it’s “just venting”. I feel like I am rejuvenating my inner thought process. I’ve made a lot of progress in the last few months, which is surprising because it’s winter and I’m usually very depressed this season. I think that shows how much I’ve gained in therapy.
To specify it was my therapy bill and I was the only one who was in the crash. Please dont let the comment above influence your decision strangers.
Steve was super helpful and really explained things in a way I could understand. After dealing with a traumatic event its hard to understand why certain things about ourselves change, but he was great at explaining the science behind it as well as giving tips on how to improve the situation.
I’ve been to therapy a few times in my life and Steve has been unquestionably the best I’ve encountered. He asks great questions and really helps you talk through things. I’ve had several strong moments of realization that has been extremely helpful.
Very good insight. Offers gems of hope and healing.
Steve has been great - his expertise, way of analytically explain and break things down and his compassion really has given me a lot. He is amazing at his job!
I personally was beyond skeptical of the practical uses of online therapy. I was not thoroughly familiar with the therapeutic process of online therapy. So I had more than a few reservations coming onto this app & starting therapy. I was “matched” with a corresponding psychologist, unfortunately it was not a match. Steve, is vastly kind. A good listener, intriguing without being intrusive. (That quality in particular I like a lot) He is gentle with your trust, not rushing to form a bond with your story. Steve is bold without being rude or curt, very good with questions. I truly appreciate working with him.
At first, I was very skeptical of the platform & the usefulness of it; however, after using it, I I have a very different opinion. After my very first session with Mr. Van Schlick, I felt an immense release of pent-up pressure. This impress me very much, mainly because I was so skeptical. After a few more sessions I really saw the value of his competency. He is an extremely valuable team player. I genuinely value our time together and value the commitment that he shows his craft. I look forward to our conversations and his poignant questions.
Steve asks great questions, listens, and gives great advice when applicable. I'm honored to meet with him!
Listens to me and explains thoroughly any concept he is talking about.
Steven has given me some techniques that has helped reduce stress on the job and at home
I’m really happy I found BetterHelp and Steve. I feel like finally maybe I found someone that will help me out.
He’s awesome!
I used to think that therapy wouldn't help me very much, or that I wouldn't get much out of it, until Steve was assigned as my BetterHelp therapist. My only regret is not signing up sooner! Steve is incredibly professional and personable, and has been immeasurably helpful during this transition period in my life. The improvements that I've made in the past few weeks have been, in very large part, thanks to Steve.
Steve is fantastic. I’ve spent a lot of years in a lot of different kinds of therapy and I’ve never met anyone who works quite like him. He’s not here to make you re-tell everything you struggle with in detail, he moves at your own pace and is great at helping you sort things out without being too invasive. He obviously cares about his patients a lot and wants them to feel safe in therapy which is so important. That quality makes him an excellent therapist both for people who might be nervous and not know what to expect in therapy and also for people like me who have been around the block a few times and have struggled to really click with a therapist. Couldn’t have asked for a better one.
Steve has a very calm but uncanny and direct way of getting to dissonant factors that I have been hiding from myself for a very long time. His manner is supportive and kind yet purposeful and very competent. Highly recommended.
Steve is always professional, punctual and a great counselor
I only had one session with him (still have more), but he gets me, understands me.
Steve is an embodiment of what I think BetterHelp is trying to do for people ultimately. He provides sound counseling services with therapies/strategies centered on the individual. He has imparted some valuable psychoeducation to me and already so many helpful insights (after just two sessions!). This is all done with care and in an environment where I have access to safe, open communication. I feel I have been matched up really well in counseling with Steve Van Schaick.
Steve really takes the time to listen. Working with him, I've gained many tools that I have used in my life and relationships. Steve really shows interest, not just from notes, in the things that are impacting me and how I can cope better. I feel that I was able to come back from a very low point in a short time because I had his listening ear and practical help.
I'm only 3 sessions in but I really like Steve as a counselor. He seems very understanding and knowledgeable.
I was turned off from BetterHelp with the first counselor that reached out to me. I was ready to cancel my subscription after three sessions. Instead I tried another and Steve has helped me control and understand my emotions. Excellent person who cares and listens.
I have had a lot of therapists in my life. Steve my an incredible therpist who really listens and gives great advice that’s has been helping me so much. !
Steve is absolutely amazing. I have appreciated his guidance through out my time with him. He has a great sense of humor which is a nice balance to our sessions. Each session he gently challenged me and guided me to discover and practice a new way of caring for myself and interacting with my now husband. Because of his guidance, and my openness to learn, I have a beautiful relationship with my sweet husband.
If you hate therapy - Steve is the guy for you!!! I was anxious about starting therapy again, I have a hard time buying I to hippie dippie “positive energy” and “mindfulness” and all that. I’m just a really black and white person and I’m a terrible therapy patient. However, Steve made me feel comfortable right away, he listened thoughtfully to why I was pursuing therapy and offered me suggestions and education on what he thought might be going on. He spent extra time talking to me to get to know me even though I’m sure I was keeping him from other work he could be doing. He is really kind, professional, and has a lot of experience with all kinds of patients. I haven’t found a therapist I’ve clicked with as well as Steve in several years. I love his logical approach to solutions and that he explains how one issue may be a symptom of another deeper issue. He is a great therapist, he’s very reasonable and logical-minded and doesn’t make you feel like you need to take up candle lighting and rain dancing to cure yourself like some other therapists do. Really looking forward to continue working with Steve.
Steve's emphasis on balance is pivotal in an increasingly complicated world. He is patient, thoughtful, and kind in his approach towards confronting deeply emotional matters.
Was timid at first but Steve is really here to help
I’ve seen a lot of counselors over the last decade and have made very little progress, but I feel like I’m actually getting somewhere with Steve. He’s really insightful and knows what he’s doing. Thanks for the hope!
Steve is an amazing and patient therapist who give you understanding and perspective on yourself. I really appreciate his knowledge of complex trauma and how it can require the brain, and his knowledge on how to deal gently with trauma and give cohesive ways to help deal with it. His guidance has provided me a much needed touchstone in my life for stability, and his professionalism and compassion is wonderfully tied together. I’d high recommend Steve.
Great Therpist !
Steve has been wonderful to work with. It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders learning how to work through my anxiety and past trauma with the mental tools Steve has recommended. I’m amazed how just in a short amount of time he has been able to make me see things in a different light, think in an entirely different direction, and react to situations rationally. I highly recommend Steve as he is extremely patient, takes the time to address your concerns, and is an impressive listener who doesn’t seem to a thing.
Steve has helped me through some very tough times in my life. I highly recommend him as a good listener and a provider of practical help.
Steve is a special person and gifted therapist. He is supportive and provides clear direction in each session that leaves me with helpful tools and better understanding of myself and situation.
Steve is extremely perceptive, responsive, warm, encouraging, and professional. He is incredibly good at what he does, and has an amazing way of helping me realize some of my underlying beliefs and equipping me with practical strategies of countering some of the beliefs that are holding me back in life. In the time that I've worked with him, Steve has helped me step more fully into being myself.
Amazing listener. Provides feedback. Good tools and lessons to practice on your own time. Positively reinforces you where you forget. Well educated and dashingly good looking!
I can not thank Steve enough for all his help and support. Steve not only hears what you have to say but he has the brilliant ability to understand what you mean. It has been very difficult for me to find someone who makes me feel understood. Who makes me feel like I'm not alone. Steve Schaick is helping to turn my life around and I can't thank him enough.
Very positive, supportive, and really took time typing "tools" in a message that we had discussed so that we could refer back to them.
Steve is one of the few rare individual to whom I have the privilege of interacting with both on the spectrum of intellects and optimism. He is able to convey the abstract concepts in literature that I don't believe many can pull off. I wholeheartedly trust in his expertise and feel honored and grateful to be working with him.
As someone who put off therapy for years, Steve's practical approach has quickly helped me to recognize the emotional barriers that have obscured my rational view. He provides helpful techniques with each session intended to help identify and avoid harmful patterns of thought. Steve has been a great ally and a solid resource for addressing my emotional state of mind.
I just started working with my counselor 2 weeks ago and I can't find the words to describe how much he's helped me and has possibly saved my life. He has given me concrete coping techniques to deal with my panic attacks and anxiety plus he's respnsive to all my text messages in a timely manner. As of today, I don't know what I would do without him. Counseling is one of best decisions I've made especially during these COVID times.
