Hi, my name is John Reid and welcome to the BetterHelp platform. Thank you for allowing me to provide you with Professional Counseling Services and thank you for considering me as your Therapist/Counselor. The five most important personal and professional characteristics that I consider necessary for a successful Counselor are: to be a good listener, to be non-judgmental, to genuinely care about people, to be professionally trained, and to be experienced.

Yes, experience is necessary. I began Pastoring in 1968 while in college. I have pastored two churches and served as a Director of Missions for a Baptist Association of 50 churches for more than 20 years here in Western North Carolina. Afterwards, I began being a Professional Counselor for the next twenty-four years at a Counseling Agency, a Baptist Residential Cottage serving teen age boys and their families, as a Therapist with two different Mental Health agencies, as a therapist in public schools, and as a BetterHelp Counselor working with Clients in the US from the Pacific to the Atlantic and working with International Clients in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, and from Canada to Mexico in North America.

Yes, education is necessary. I earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1976 and used the Counselor training in my church work. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2007 and recently completed a five year training program in Gestalt Therapy with Appalachian Gestalt Training Institute in Asheville, NC.

While education, training, and experience are important, nothing replaces a willingness and an ability to listen at a deep human level and relate one to one.

Along life’s journey I have made some mistakes. Out of these experiences I have learned that everyone, no matter who you are or what station in life you are, makes mistakes. Experiencing forgiveness is important. One can recover from mistakes and move forward. And I learned not to be judgmental. I will not judge you.

All of my life experiences have taught me to genuinely care for others and the concerns they have in their lives.

I have helped many people, adults and children, with a variety of Mental Health issues included but not limited to: Depression, Anxiety, various Mood Disorders, ADHD, Low Self-Esteem, Marriage and Divorce, Divorce Reaction, Blended Families, and Anger Management issues to mention a few.

My wife and I have been married for forty-eight years. We have two successful daughters and a beautiful granddaughter.

When doing Christian counseling, I use the Bible as a text but not as a weapon. I do not believe in using the Bible to beat people over the head. I believe that love in all its expressions heals.

I spent several months working with John after a series of extremely stressful situations had left me mentally and emotionally drained. Through our sessions, John was able to pinpoint the things that were behind my stress (failure to set appropriate boundaries with family and work, negative self-perception due to past trauma). He also helped me to move past the things that were impacting my view of myself, stand up for myself in situations where I was being taken advantage of, and set appropriate boundaries in a firm but reasonable way. His help was absolutely key in moving past a very difficult time in my life, and if I need therapy again, I will absolutely not hesitate to seek John out.

Rev Reid truly has the heart and passion in helping people. He was instrumental in walking me through my bitterness & anxiety. He listened well and without telling me what to do, he guided me into realizing the core issue and also equipped me with tools to be better. His sharing was also pertinent which showed that he truly understood my circumstances without any judgement. I felt heard, loved and encouraged. I'm so thankful I connected with Rev Reid !

Reviewed July 2022

I began seeing a therapist by age 11 and continued to see a new person off and on as I grew up. I have never found someone that I felt I could connect with and receive much help from. At the beginning of this year my wife encouraged me to seek out therapy again, give it another shot, it could be different now! I was not exstatic to research who to find locally, read about their accomplishments and end up being disappointed again when I simply arrive and feel as if I am speaking to a wall. That is until I looked into betterhelp and was connected with John. John has been everything you would not think a therapist would be. He is honest, wise and very educational. John has helped me reach my goals in controlling my anger and anxiety so much faster than nearly 12 years of therapy, this was all done within 6 months. I cannot say enough great thinks about John and I would STRONGLY recommend him to anyone. He will listen to you and give you some of the best advice, it does not feel as if you are speaking to someone who does not care about your problems. For so long I felt like therapy was just a money pit where I would throw hundreds of dollars down a drain and not see any positive outcomes. Since my time with John I have turned my marriage around, my work and my life. Thank you John for everything you have done and for the lessons I plan on continuing to work on the rest of my life.

I could not have made the strides I have so quickly without him! I went from being single, angry, and unable to communicate my feelings, to falling in love with a wonderful person and being in a long term relationship. He has taught me many things in a short period of time that I've been able to apply to my own daily life and make positive changes in my thinking. If you share a thought or experience that you've had with him, he will find a way to relate to you and help you more clearly articulate how to process or proceed with something.
